Cosmetology and Barber School

Per the State of Virginia’s  program requirements  which are outlined in the Board of Barbers and Cosmetology Regulations, pages 15-16; further,  the curricula will include both theory and practicum requirements that include the following:

  • Orientation 
  • Manicuring and pedicuring 
  • Shampooing and rinsing 
  • Scalp treatments 
  • Hair styling 
  • Hair cutting 
  • Permanent waving-chemical relaxing 
  • Hair coloring and bleaching 
  • Skin care and make-up 
  • Wigs, hair pieces, and related theory 
  • Salon management

In the second year of operation, The Turn Around Place, will open a licensed Cosmetology school. The school will be led by a director and will have a full time and a part time licensed Cosmetology instructor. The Cosmetology Program curricula shall be based on a minimum of 1,500 clock hours and shall include performances in accordance with 18VAC41-20-220.  The curricula and guidelines for the program will adhere to the outline provided by the Virginia Department of Education, Board for Barbers and Cosmetology Regulations which can be found at this link:

  • School policies
  • State law regulations, and professional ethics
  • Business and shop management
  • Client consultation
  • Personal hygiene (per the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology Regulations Page 15)
  • Cutting the hair (with a razor, clippers, and shears)
  • Tapering the hair
  • Thinning the hair
  • Shampooing the hair
  • Styling the hair (with a hand hair dryer)
  • Thermal waving
  • Permanent waving with chemicals
  • Shaving
  • Trimming a moustache or beard
  • Applying hair color
  • Lightening or toning the hair
  • Analyzing skin or scalp conditions
  • Giving scalp treatments
  • Giving basic facial massage or treatment
  • Sanitizing and maintaining implements and equipment
